Hi guys - thanks for the replies.

I believe I'm on a flat rate which I was surprised about. It wasn't an economy 7 tariff as I was expecting, though I don't have the bill to hand at the minute so would have to check this and confirm this evening.

    Pics are below:

    Many thanks

Is the flat above william h brown?

It was possibly originally a business tariff, the cheap rate seems to be 19:00 to 7:00 on the timeswitch.

You need to check exactlty what tariff you are on, a flat rate is no good for storage heating.

Funny you should ask, thorganby, William H Brown are not downstairs but across the street. What gave that away?

I'll check the tariff this evening and perhaps speak to EDF about switching to one more appropriate.

    Thanks again.

If there do turn out to be two rates, and the heating pence/kwh is less than half the day rate, it might even work out cheaper to keep the system you have than change to E7. You'll need to do some sums when you confirm it.

Also, possibly if you are on a flat rate, it may be possible to change to dual rate at a competitive rate. Ask about that option before you tell them to come in and rip everything out.

The top screw on the timer switch has been mangled. Looks like someones had a go at entering the meter to adjust it. The screw should be pristine even if its very old. Should also have a metal seal on it as a deterrent to be tampering the time switch which has live current going through it
One meter has registered 1372 units between the two photos, the other has advanced 177.
depending on what time you took the photo how did it compare to the pointer on the front plate which indicated what time the time switch was actually set to. It was 6 am on later photo and 5.30 pm on the other .
I think I would get in touch with the supplier to get that timeswitch changed. They will fit either an Eco 7 smart meter or a new digital meter with built in time switch which will be set accurately.
Do as frugal/D.M.E. suggests and check that the meters are yours by putting the kettle on to see if the meter with the rotating ring speeds up a lot.1372 units in a month on one of the meters is a lot but if you have electric fires on its quite possible.
    .
Night rate coming on at 1645 should nt happen in a normal Eco 7. I can t see when the pointer ( which would have "off" printed on it on it ) is set to switch the cheap rate off, could be around 7 am or 12 ish noon.

Have you checked that the meter labelled as being yours actually is the one supplying your flat?

do the meter serial num bers match those on the bills?

Hello all - many thanks for all the replies, it's really useful getting some advice from people who know what they're talking about.

Update: I got the actual statement through from EDF and it turns out I'm not on an economy 7 tariff at all. Strange given that there's two separate meters. There was a usage of 1696Kwh at 16.75p a unit - a £311 bill for just shy of 5 weeks.

Also, I was away over the weekend for 3 nights, turned everything off with the exception of the fridge and the meters still ran up over 30Kwh. Interestingly (and terrifyingly), I took pictures of the meters yesterday @ 11:00 and again today @ 14:30 and they reckon I've used 108Kwh... Something is clearly amiss.

I've been in touch with my landlord. EDF have cancelled my £311 bill and agreed that the meter seems to need changing.

    Watch this space I guess.

    Thanks again.

Did you check that the meter labelled as supplying your flay ACTUALLY IS THE CORRECT ONE YOU ARE READING?

Did you also check the serial numbers of the meters match the serial numbers on the bill?
