SSE Share certificates

Hi I'm trying to find my husbands SSE share certificates but can't. He is still getting the dividends so we know that he still owns them.

Is it possible that they changed names from another company and they didn't update share certificates?

We have found some Scottish Hydro x2 that add up to the same amount as his SSE....

any tips would be fab

Thanks for finding that. I looked on wiki but found a completely different page with far less info.

Having said that though, are the Scottish Hydro shares the shares that we send in if we want to sell?

I simply cant find any SSE shares

Probably best to discuss the situation with SSE's current share registrars: http://sse.com/investors/shareholderservices/shareholdercontacts/

Thanks, I tried yesterday but completely gave up on the conversation. The chap that I spoke to would not give clear answers to my questions and even suggested that it would cost upwards of £8000 for a replacement certificate.

    So I came here...

I recently had to replace a lost SSE certificate, it was in the order of £70. Could the original share certificate have been sent to an online broker such as Halifax Share Dealing? Then there wouldn't be a certificate to find anymore

they did change the company name from scottish hydro-electric plc ... see the "previous names" section in the companies house record: https://beta.companieshouse.gov.uk/company/SC117119

    does the share certificate say
    1) the company is registered in scotland with number 117119; and
    2) that they are ordinary shares of 50p (this is the "nominal value" - not the real value of the shares)?

if it's yes to both, then i think the certificate will still be valid.

As I understand it - the fee is not the cost of replacing the certificate, it's an indemnity in case a second share certificate appears later.

I think that this hits the nail on the head.

The OP needs to contact the registrars and ask the simple question "Are these two share certificates still valid?".

The merger was in 1998. It seems that new certs for the merged company were not issued to holders of Scottish Hydro?

    See https://www.financebanter.co.uk/uk-finance/7130-scottish-hydro-share-certificates.html

I phoned the registrars this morning and their explanation was that new
certificates had been issued after a bonus issue and that they did not want the expense of issuing new certificates "that might get lost" after the
    merger.
In fact the bonus issue was in June 1994 just before we moved house.
My wife's share certificate have the old address on them.
