I've only ever been to a court when our teenage son was asked to be a police witness for their trying to stop a stolen car and the son needed a chaperone.

In the waiting area I was approached by a man awaiting his court hearing, who told me how to con Social Services into refurnishing your downstairs rooms by hiding things upstairs or providing new beds by hiding theirs at a friend's house. I hope they have become wise to this ploy, but think freebies have now stopped, nyway.

I have been. called twice for JS. First time I was excused as it would have interfered with my Nursing Finals (pre University) and second time as I am now disabled. My son was called lastyear and was excused due to his Caring commitments.
  • just wondering i have received a jury service letter and it only gives you 2 months notice which is not enough notice for a company to organise (just like holidays)
can that be used to defer it
can it also be deferred because i think its against my rights to be told what to do
also i do not believe in the justice system in the country

Not sure it can be deferred because of this reason. Reason it can be deferred are in this link.

    1) it would be long enough if you were taken ill
    2)no it can't
    3) you could always if you dislike the justice system so much, move to Russia

This also raises the question of the disabled person themselves being called for jury service - If someone is capable of understanding what is right and wrong - but perhaps just physically disabled - can they be "forced" to do jury service - what excuse could they use ?
The reason that I ask - is that a work colleage, about twenty years ago went on "prolonged" jury service - for a good 2 months - We were never given any details of the case - but I am assuming that it was serious - but I could never handle such a long service ....
