Payslip - Basic pay half this month!?

Options
Hello,

I've just received my payslip for this month and was surprised to find that my basic pay is approximately half of what it should be. I intend on speaking to payroll about it but would like a second opinion in case I'm missing something obvious. My details are thus:

- I work full time for the NHS.
- My wkd/earned column usually says 162.95 with the rate being 13.5858. I therefore usually get a basic pay of 2213.75.
- My payslip this month says wkd/earned= 86.73 so my basic pay this month is only 1178.29.
- I seem to have been given statutory sick pay of 370.17, although I only took three days off sick so I'm rather confused about that.

My questions are:
- Is there an explanation for why I have received essentially half of my basic pay?
- Is this because I was off sick for three days?
- Am I not entitled to paid sick pay up to a certain amount?

I've never taken time off sick so have no idea how it works to be honest but just always assumed that up to a week or so, sick days would be paid.

Any help appreciated.

That's what happens when you make assumptions, especially that everything will happen as you choose. I can't see your contract from here so suggest you ask your payroll dept. or line manager.

Im surprised since my trust pays full pay for quite a while before deferring to SSP

Have you had a lot of sick leave this year?

You're going to have to speak to Payroll, no one else can really answer this for you - it looks like some sort of error - but would depend on your individual terms in your contract in respect of sick pay. The people I know who work for the NHS get full pay for about 6 months.

But as some guidance, the £370 sounds like a full month of SSP - but you don't get paid SSP for the first 3 days - so as such, if you did only get SSP for the days you were off - you'd just be missing three days normal pay - you wouldn't actually get any SSP, but it might be noted on the payslip in some way, maybe with a 0 value.
  • Thanks for the advice - I tried to talk to payroll and my business manager today but both had gone home early.

I'm sure it must be an error as it's the only 3 days I've taken off in the 7 months I've been working for the trust. I was just a bit confused really but am reassured that several people seem to think it is a bit odd. I'll speak to payroll tomorrow but just wanted to check I wasn't going mad. Appreciate the help.

Hopefully you can get to the bottom of it tomorrow. In the meantime, I'd strongly recommend that you get your contract of employment / staff handbook out so that you can check what you should have got, so you're informed when you speak to them tomorrow.

Might be better to speak to your line manager first, who if he can see and agree to the error, might be able to expedite a correction more efficiently than you alone. Unless they made the mistake of reporting your absence to payroll in the first instance of course!

    Good luck!
  • Hi do you work shifts or have a regular amount of hours per week? How many hours did your 3 days off total? It does look as if they’ve made an error.

    Regular hours.

My working days are 7.5 hours so in total I had 22.5 hours off.

    Thanks for the reply.

Are you saying there was no one at your trust's payroll provider to answer a simple question because they'd all gone home early?

Only a guess but it's possible that your manager advised HR/payroll that you were off sick but didn't tell them you had come back.

I wondered that, but would it only work (in that he was seemingly paid SSP for a month minus three days) if he was off sick at the very beginning of the month? But surely payroll would have been asking for a fit note after a week?
