Problems Connecting to Wifi on Laptop

Hi there,
I've followed your instructions and gone into the Device Manager and network adaptors and it lists the following:-
- Intel(R) Wifi Link 5100 AGN
It says that the device is running properly and that the drivers are up to date. I think I'm going to have another chat with the seller.
Thanks for all of your help.
It's possible that it's just the antenna cable then as I think device manager wouldn't know if it's connected or not.
Follow the youtube video I linked earlier and have a look yourself.0 -

Hi Colin,
I've had a little progress since following your instructions to hold the second button in with the cable disconnected from the laptop, as the radio is now. I haven't had time to delve any further as yet, but will update you on any further progress when I return home.
Thanks so much for all of your help and patience.0 -
With WiFi enabled on the laptop, can you see your Virgin Hub in the list if you try to connect?
Are you sure that WiFi is enabled on the Virgin Hub? You will need the Hub SSID and the network password to connect.

Forget about the WPA button until we have got wifi working.
So - unplug the network cable from everywhere.
Next, look down the bottom right hand side of the screen, near the clock ..
Do you have a little picture like this ?
It may have an orange blob on it, or it may have a red cross through it ..
Slide the wifi switch that you found earlier and tell us what effect it has on this picture
Also, click the left mouse button on this picture and tell us if a list appears above it0 -

Hi Andy, thanks for your assistance.
After unplugging the network cable from everywhere as advised, the symbol did appear appear, however, it then fluctuated between a different symbol of two screens or boxes, one in front of the other, with a red X through it.
When left-clicking on the symbol, an error message appears stating that I am not connected to any networks, and a box below to connect to the network and Sharing Centre. However, when right-clicking on the symbol, the following list appears:-
- Connect to a network
- Turn on activity animation
- Turn off notification of new networks
- Diagnose and repair
- Network and Sharing Centre
Apologies for the long rambling post, I just wanted to ensure that I had noted all of the details.
Thanks again.
PS - Please note that if I don't get back to you straightaway, I'm not being rude, I'm just dashing in and out while picking up any messages.
Best wishes0 -

Hi Thorganby, thanks so much for the link, and when I return home, will make sure that I read through the details thoroughly.
Thanks again and best wishes0 -
williacg, how much did you pay for the laptop?
that wifi switch, if you sit in front of the laptop, the switch is pulled towards you to enable the laptop to work.
If you look at the side that switch should not show the red part of the slider on the switch. On booting up above the right edge of the ESC key there is a blue wifi indicator that should come on before the password box appears
I have run Linux Mint and windows on these. Windows ran fine, but Mint 17 needed different wifi adapter that had to be downloaded and this was a common and known issue.
Also I believe these dells whitelist the wifi cards, so you can't slot any old card in there.0 -
How to Enable Wi-Fi on the Dell Latitude E6400
- Slide the switch on the side of the laptop toward the front of the laptop. This switch enables Wi-Fi connectivity on the Dell Latitude E6400. When switched into the back position, the Wi-Fi is turned off.
- Turn on your Dell Latitude E6400 laptop and log into Windows Vista.
- Click on the Windows "Start" button.
- Click on "Wireless," located in the Start menu's "Show" list. A list of currently broadcasting wireless networks appears on screen. With your Wi-Fi enabled, you can connect to any of these available networks. Secured networks ask you for a password when you click "Connect," while unsecured networks connect automatically.

Morning all,
I thought I would report back to thank you all for your kind and patience helping me get my laptop wifi started, and to update you on what the issue was, just in case anyone else experiences the same problem.
I have spent the last two days going around in circles with Virgin Media, as once I had located the available networks, I was not able to connect to any of them with the passwords detailed on my hub, and each time that I contacted Virgin, they were adamant that their hub does not support Vista, and and just sent me packing to confront the seller, to ask him to update the adapter or something, and needless to say, each time I returned to the seller he stated the opposite.
Finally, after threatening to close my Virgin account, the 5th technician finally accessed my laptop remotely and after two and half hours yesterday, finally got it up and running. I'm not sure what their problem was, as I was too frazzled by this time to ask, and just grateful that it was working and didn't have to bother the seller again.
Thanks once again for all of your help - you guys rock!0
