problems with tv picture

ok we have a sky box connected to a dvd recorder which is then connected to the tv. we have a dvd home cinema system connected to the tv via hdmi. the analogue signal cable goes into the dvd recorder and then from that into the tv.
the problem we have is that the analogue picture is now black and white. the picture on the tv screen from the dvd recorder is also black and white. i tried recording a tv show with the dvd recorder and played it on the home cinema system and it was fine. the sky box and the home cinema system both have no problems.
so why do we have a black and white analogue picture and why is the picture from the dvd recorder black and white?

I'm not that techie, but I am a habitual user of cheap tellies and have therefore encountered a fair few problems. Two things that spring to mind:

    1) Connection between the Recorder and the TV - sometimes when these are loose or damaged the colour is affected (mine was purple for ages).

    2) Settings on the TV - sounds daft, but I came home one day to find my telly was black and white. I assumed it had just packed in and put up with it for weeks... then realised that the "Colour Saturation / Brightness / Contrast etc" settings had gone a bit strange - adjusting them brought the colour back.

    hi,
i dont think it is the tv because everything would be black and white then wouldnt it? the sky box and the home cinema are fine. i was thinking that it could be one of the scart cables needing replacing but the reason i am not totally sure is because when the analogue picture goes into the dvd recorder and then into the tv there is no scart involved. or does the system automatically take pictures down the scart cable even if an analogue cable is connected?

lol. yes i know what you mean. reading my description and figuring it out from that is really hard when i cant figure it out looking at the actual equipment.

i will try and word it differently.
    what we have,
    a hd ready vlcd tv.
    a dvd recoreder.
    a sky+ box.
a home cinema system with hd.

rather than me explaining again what is connected to what i figure anyone that can help may well be able to work out what is connected to what themselves. logically we use the dvd recorder to record from both the sky box and analogue. everything is connected with scart cables except the home cinema which is hd and obviously the analogue signal from the wall.

just to repeat the problem, the analogue picture is black and white and the picture from the dvd recorder is black and white but the dvd recorder still records in colour because i played it on the home cinema to check.

You need to check the video format on the DVDR-TV SCART connection.

You may find that the SCART connector, on the TV, can accept i/p in composite, s-video or even RGB format.

Check which format is being sent by the DVDR.

They need to match. RGB, s-video then composite in order of preference.

It sounds like one of then is set for S-Video and t'other is composite.

    hi,
we have had the dvd recorder for about 2 years and this suddenly happened by itself. we have not done anything to the settings to cause it. i will check them to be sure but as it has worked fine for this amount of time i cant see the settings being wrong. another odd thing i forgot to mention is while the picture may have gone black and white teletext is still colour.

Teletext display is a function of the TV.

If your settings are fine then maybe the DVDR is faulty.

yeah but teletext is broadcast with the channel and therefore is coming down the same cable and via the same equipment.
