virgin media - no direct debit on 1st bill?

Just had a bit of an odd one with Virgin media..
I've just moved house and transferred the account to the new address. All simple..
However I've just noticed on my second bill that I've been charged double and received a late payment fee!
I've just phoned and was told I had to pay the 1st bill manually as the direct debit is never set up for the first bill of the new address. Apparently this is because the new account is set up with a zero balance. Does this sound right?
When I contacted them for the move they said everything would be taken care of and I just assumed the direct debit would continue to be active. Have I missed something?

No it does not. the account should be in your name the address is just your contact details who pays the bill the addressed or the person who it is addresed to. I would start a complaint especially since you asked these questions ahead of time. I think they have messed something up behind the scenes as it should of been a case of updating your address details not creating a new account.0
