marriage allowance?

Hi,

I've been made redundant recently and my husband has gone back to work full time. I worked part time and he was self employed.

I was wondering, if I'm unemployed but in received of carer's allowance and my husband is working full time. Will I be entitled for marriage allowance?

If yes, I don't think I'll be entitled for this tax year? As my husband just start his full time work in February, his earning for 2017/2018 is less than £11.500?

Thanks.

San

You have to consider each tax year separately.

And whether you're unemployed, a carer, retired etc is irrelevant all that matters is your income.

It seems you have different possibilities for each of the tax years you are looking at,

2017:18 - could your husband apply and you get the benefit of the Marriage Allowance? That's assuming his total taxable income for the year, including his business profits, are low enough for it to be worthwhile.

2018:19 - once we get to the start of the tax year on 6 April 2018 you could apply and your husband would get the benefit for the new tax year. This assumes your taxable income will be low enough for you not to need all of your Personal Allowance (£11,850 in 2018:19) which seems to be the case based on your current situation.

Remember the person giving away the allowance is the one who applies and the other person gets any refund or reduced tax.
