Will son moving in with us affect our benefits?

I am posting this on behalf of a friend...

My friend and her husband currently live alone. They are both 80 years old and are receiving the following benefits

Pension Credit
Attendance Allowance (both getting this)
Council Tax - they do not pay anything

The husband is bed bound and has carers coming in 4 times a day. They receive this care at a subsidized rate (something like £15 per week) which I think is based on their savings being below a certain level.

Their son (over 18) came to stay for a few weeks but now wants to move in with them. They would be happy for him to move in but are extremely worried that they might lose their benefits and, in particular, the carers that come in 4 times a day.

I just wondered if anybody knows whether this is likely to cause them a problem before they agree and notify the authorities of the change.

Thanks very much indeed

There will be no deduction made for a non dependent (which is what the son will be) as regards council tax as both the claimants are receiving AA.

Their Pension Credit may be affected if they receive the Severe Disability Premium within their PC as they would have a non dependent living with them.

As regards the carers coming in then I do not believe that having a non dependent living there would affect this as regards their financial assessment but I am not sure. Best to enquire of social services before they agree to his moving in.

The SDP could be a lot of money to lose and may even stop their Pension Credit entirely depending on their other income (pension/savings)

Suggests someone telephone social services re financial assessment for cares in home asking them this hypothetical question.

You can also put their details into the benefit calculator to see the effect on their Pension Credit. (Look at the award letters to see if they have the SDP within their award)

Is the son working? Does he receive any disability benefits?

Might be best to go to CAB for some advice about their Pension Credit.
