Commuting to London advice

I've just taken a job in Central London and am looking for advice on the Commute, I will be coming in from Worcester, I intend to stay over Monday to Thursday, as was looking for commute advice.

I'd like to keep costs to a minimum, so was looking at the option of Driving close enough to the outskirts of London so as to be at the west end of the district line, and then park and tube the rest.

As I don't really want to lug a weeks worth of clothes on the train/tube and into the office.

Any help or suggestions greatly appreciated.

Martyn

Where do you plan to live Monday to Thursday? That will affect you choices on commuting and parking.
  • I'd primarily look toward hammersmith/chiswick somewhere west on the District line. I'm just not sure what happens regards clothes for the week, this is why i was considering driving parking then the clothes can be in the car until i check in to my lodgings for the week.

You could also look at staying somewhere on the Heathrow Connect line (stations are Hayes & Harlington, Southall, Hanwell, West Ealing as well as Ealing Broadway).

These have a direct train to Paddington now and from next year, direct Crossrail service into Central London.

Don't come in much further than Hammersmith or you'll be getting into the CCZ (Congestion Charge Zone).
Other than that, the main issue will be parking, unless it's available privately at your lodgings. Much of suburban London is either metered or resident parking only.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Many London Borough councils have grown wise to this and have installed no waiting between 12 and 2 (or other 2 hour period in the middle of the working day) for non permit holders in many areas close to tube stations in the suburbs.

Might want to look at the cost of parking. Compared to Worcester it is eye wateringly expensive anywhere within a short train ride of London.

When I was working away consistently, I took my shirts to a cleaners locally to where I was staying each week. Collected them the next week and dropped off the next batch. I know its extra cost but it was worth it.

A long drive then a working day can be very tiring - I used to do it regularly.

I'd recommend taking the train when you're tired. Given that Worcester is expensive and slow to London by train, it may be worth traveling from warwick parkway.
