Large amount of money to invest

I hope the OP has enough information to make an informed decision without worrying to much about the percentage chances of winning some money after investing money in Premium Bonds.The statement described as 'rubbish' ("putting in Premium Bonds would "cost" the OP £54 per month") is inaccurate and misleading as worded - the probability of £50K of PBs winning nothing in any given month is 13% so therefore that is the probability of PBs "costing" the holder £54 versus using a 1.3% account, if measured solely over a one month period (the percentage would obviously reduce heavily beyond that).
It seems reasonable to me to describe as 'rubbish' a statement that's only true 13% of the time - "putting in Premium Bonds could "cost" the OP £54 per month" or "putting in Premium Bonds would "cost" the OP £54 per month in the statistically unlikely event that the PBs didn't win anything" would clearly both be more truthful and accurate statements....
Despite our views on PBs apparently differing, I agree with this!
PS. What if the OP was born under a bad sign and if it wasn t for bad luck they wouldn t have no luck at all?0 -
Yes, me too - as discussed regularly on here, I don't think anyone disputes that the return on PBs isn't guaranteed and that its scale is dependent on luck but conversely some dismiss them using the apparent assumption that the return will be zero, which isn't a particularly helpful position to take....I hope the OP has enough information to make an informed decision without worrying to much about the percentage chances of winning some money after investing money in Premium Bonds.0 -
Fair point and it does give the OP and others a well balanced overview.Yes, me too - as discussed regularly on here, I don't think anyone disputes that the return on PBs isn't guaranteed and that its scale is dependent on luck but conversely some dismiss them using the apparent assumption that the return will be zero, which isn't a particularly helpful position to take....
I applaud your ability to always give objective answers that rarely if ever betray any personal preferences (other than a passion for fair play
)
Whilst I share your desire for a balanced argument my risk averse nature invariably colours my input such as using would instead of could.0
