Ok, I understand that some policies/schemes are restrictive and I would have expected a more expensive policy but I'm suprised there are insurers that don't offer policies/schemes AT ALL to people who've had a single accident. Is that common?

There are schemes where if you have had one fault claim in the past X years that you didnt disclose and it gets found out, your policy WILL be cancelled one way or another, the only question is whether it will be by way of voidance or cancellation.

Some schemes for specialist vehicles, will not even allow a non-fault claim in the past X years if you are under a certain age

Its not so much 'we wouldnt have offered you cover', its more 'we wouldn't have offered you cover at X price' or 'we wouldn't have offered you cover on this specific scheme'

And there are lots of insurers that cater specifically to people who have had a policy cancelled or voided

I had an accident 4 years and 6 months ago. I still count the exact months creeping up to the day I can celebrate the fact it's over 5 and my insurance will drop.
You don't have to wait till 5 years have passed after making a claim to stop disclosing - some insurers ask for a shorter history (eg Aviva - not a recommendation, but gthey don't want to know about claims more than 4 years old) which is to the advantage of anyone with claims to disclose

Shop round for insurers who don't ask for 5 years history at renewal

    Hi
My daughter recently renewed her insurance policy and when asked if she had any accidents in the last 5 years she replied no, she has not had her insurance cancelled as it turns out she had an accident 4 years and 9 months ago, she believed it was earlier in the year and so over the 5 years, she now has to disclose every year for the rest of her life that she had insurance cancelled/refused . this seems rather harsh for a genuine error. I can't remember what I done last week let alone almost 5 years ago.

Does anyone know if there is a right to appeal to have this removed from her records ?

    Thanks

Did her insurer not contact her about this? We made a mistake some years ago about not divulging a "free" windscreen chip repair. Our new insurers said they'd cancel but we spoke to them and it was sorted . Simples! Keep track of correspondence! Tell your daughter!

My understanding of the latter 2 i.e. they would have offered cover but at a different price, then the insurer had to pay the claim but could demand the difference in premium.
My memory is vague but I thought the ombudsman had ruled on that.

That used to be the case, now it's changed so if it would have been acceptable but at a higher price then the insurer will pay the claim in proportion to the premium received vs should have been received (i.e. if the insured paid £750 but it should have been £1000 they will pay 75% of the claim)
