Hi. Myself and my husband have had a joint current account for over 10 years. I have been having trouble in obtaining a new credit card recently and I believe that it may have something to do with My husband’s poor credit rating and being “linked” to him via our joint account. Would getting a separate bank account of my own and not being “linked” in any other way improve my chances on credit card applications?

What else is on your file?
Defaults, late payments?
How much credit do you have elsewhere?
I'm other to unlike you would need to close the joint account0 -
Hi Gary. There are no defaults, late payments or anything of the kind in my credit file (just one satisfied default on my husbands file).
I don’t have credit elsewhere. Credit cards (I am an additional cardholder) and bills are in my husband’s name only.0 -
If you have no other credit that could be why.
Not even a contract phone under your name?
What card were you applying for? What's your annual income?0 -
Sorry, I do have a mobile phone contract.
I have tried a number of 0% balance transfer credit card eligibility checkers (Virgin, HSBC, M&S etc) but have been told I would not qualify for any.
Annual income is over £35k but I am self employed, if that makes a difference.0 -
OK.
Little point in applying for a balance transfer card for a start since you don't have any other cards to transfer balances from.
I would check a sub-prime lender - Capital One, Vanquis, Aqua, Marble.
They have eligibility checkers.
But don't expect a high limit initially0 -
It was the balances from the cards in my husbands name that I was looking to transfer from0
