£990 quote for a new clutch on a 8yr old Toyota?

Hi,

My Toyota Auris needs a new clutch after taking it to a main dealer near London.

They initially said it would cost £1300 and I said I can't afford that. The guy said he will speak to his manager and they came down to £990.

Parts, labour everything included and they are waving the £140 diagnostic cost apparently.

This seems rather excessive?

I know I can get it done at a local garage maybe for cheaper but I am trusting Toyota's dealership to get it right, I guess this is what I am paying for? Part of me feels ripped off.

Currently quite demoralised on the cost.

A main dealer near London... How much is their hourly labour charge...? The question's not whether it is into three figures or not, but how far. Plus VAT. I'd guess the "£140 diagnostic cost" is one hour's labour. A good local garage won't be too much over half that, even in the SE.

Guessing at the engine size, a top-quality clutch kit is £120ish, and it's daft not to replace the slave cylinder while you're in there, which is the same again. The dealer price will be a lot higher, of course - they're from a typical online parts vendor.

So let's say that £990 is £400 parts from the dealer, plus four hours labour. A local garage would probably be in the £5-600 ballpark.

Also, a local garage will have more experience of dealing with the curveballs that an older car can throw than a dealer, who are mostly just doing near-new stuff day-in-day-out.

If it's just the clutch then it should be costing you around £610 - Toyota offer fixed price repairs and that's the price they list for an Auris clutch.

If you go on the Toyota UK website -> Owners -> Repairs. Select Auris Clutch - fixed price £610, with option to book.

    https://www.toyota.co.uk/owners/service-mot-maintenance/repairs.json

One thing I'd add - don't assume all Toyota dealerships charge the same prices, they don't. I needed a repair and wanted the dealer to do it, rang around a few and got quotes for the same job ranging from £330 upto £500+ so even with dealers it pays to get several quotes.

At those kind of savings, it can even pay to drive further afield and use it as a day out to another town/city.

Happened to my sister's IQ a couple of years ago. Cost around £700, but that was at our local garage.
