CCTV system without internet/router connection?

Options
Is there any cctv surveillance and video recording system that does not need to access the Internet? I have read on an aging thread that a NVR and the IP cameras will (on one make) automatically connect to each other on its own proprietary network and start to communicate with each other without Internet access (without connecting to a router). By connecting the NVR to a monitor, I could start monitoring. Just wondering if anyone has any experience in this layout. Thank you.

Yes, it's possible. You need some kind of server on the network that will provide DHCP services to all other devices on the network. This tells all other devices what IP address to use. The easiest way to do this is to use an internet router (even one that isn't connected to the internet)

Or get one of the 4 channel to 16 channel DVRs, cheap and fit your own hard drive to suit your needs. I bought some older style but excellent quality Panasonic camera's.

Swappable lenses, i bought some auto focus ones very cheaply, or you can used fixed focus for wide angles or fixed focus on a set distance.

Lots of options. It can connect to the internet, but doesnt need it.

You can do it this the above way with dhcp, but it is better to give each camera its own fixed ip address anyway, that way they do not poll for an ip when booted and you know for sure that 192.168.1 is always the recording device, and 192.168.10 is always the camera in lounge, and 192.168.11 is the camera in garage etc

if you have 3 or less cameras you may want to use a old asdl router as a 4 port switch, still i would not use dhcp of the router, but fixed up address.

use fixed ip address things on network hosting infrastructure that do not change, provide a service, like nas, cameras, server and router etc.

Network clients like pc's, mobiles, tv etc can use dhcp.

You definitely do not need an internet connection, but without one you probably will not be remotely alerted, but some cameras which detect movement can trigger external devices like alarms, the sound of barking dogs etc.

Some routers accept a 4G USB stick, so theres even the possibility of being able to monitor the cameras when needed. A pay as you go SIM should be cheap to run.
  • Swann, and I guess others too, use their own dedicated network cabling. The kits come with RJ45 terminated Ethernet cables, plug the camera on one end, other end into the recorder. No router involved.

Mine is a Swann NVR7400 based system. Works well but is expensive compared to Foureon, which friends tell me is just as good for a lot less money.

    The NVR manual is:
