Scottish Power credit card

I need to pay a Scottish Power energy bill, but according to their website they charge an admin fee for paying by credit card. Is that right? I thought companies were no longer allowed to charge fees on credit card payments since the government brought in the new rules?

From Scottish Power:

Please note there is an administrative charge of 1.5% of the amount paid for all credit card payments. American Express Credit Cards not accepted.

Much easier get SP to bill you and collect by DD and enjoy a small saving
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

I would normally pay by direct debit, but we're on a goodbye cycle with them so it's just a one off bill to pay. They were the previous resident's supplier when we moved in to our new house, then I changed supplier to the cheapest deal once we moved in. So we've got one bill to pay which just covers the energy used until we changed.

Hence, I've never had to pay by credit card before because I've always been on dd!

When you keyed in your details and the details of your card, prior to accepting the payment against your card, did the amount being billed change?

Energy company's shouldnt be charging for payment by CC.

However if they do, phone up the relevant billing team or the company and pay over the phone or claim the admin charge back

Hello kiyonebabe, I know it might be too late for you to do this, but I've set up a monthly payment to my new energy supplier called 'Bulb' , using my Barclaycard CREDIT card. It wasn't easy, because Barclaycard's website doesn't mention this method anywhere, but my reason for doing this is that they give a % cashback for every £ spent on your card. I currently get about £120 cashback every year and this energy payment setup will add a further £10 to it. I found that the best way to set it up was to telephone Bulb customer services and arrange it with them.
I always pay the monthly credit card balance in full.

Depends on the credit card; If Money Transfer is available transfer the money into your bank account and pay with a debit card or by bank transfer or even over the counter in cash at a Paypoint shop. Most credit cards offer cash advance and doing that as a one-off is unlikely to affect your credit.
