I was with Npower prior to EDF who are current. I tried to send meter readings this morning and failed, tried the chat line -

I now have to ring and book an appointment to get an EDF engineer to install new smart meters!

What a farce!

EDF may not agree to provide you with a new smart meter - which may also go dumb if you switch again. Existing smart meters (SMETS1) will be updated from late this year onwards. If a smart meter cannot be updated then it will be deemed an orphaned asset and replaced.

Putting aside the Smart Meter fiasco why can't you enter the readings on your inline EDF account ?

I tried using the smart meter monitor readings, they were rejected, too high/low. The smart gas meter just said "credit on".

I would have thought that EDF would have guided me through this problem when I joined them.

Don't use the monitor, you need to take readings from the meter(s) itself. Particuarly for gas, as a lot of monitors display a kWh reading, but the supplier wants the volume in m³ (the kWh figure is about 11 times bigger than m³)

Depending on the model they might have stopped updating on the monitor too.

Be like most people and put the remote monitor at the back of a drawer - only use the actual meter for readings.

Read your meters at least monthly and keep your own spreadsheet to help you keep on top of costs.

I am quite happy with my current SMET1 meters. IHD displays meter readings. If mine cannot be updated, they better leave well alone. Got my meter readings down to a fine art. Every Sat, and 24th for Elec and last day of month for gas.

Only Secure Liberty gas IHD monitors give the reading in Kwh. These are used now by Eon, First Utility, Ovo, Utilita.
BG s monitor gives the reading in cubic metres.
