Hairline cracks in plaster

Hi,

We have recently bought a newly renovated 1930s semi. In the alcoves either side of the fireplace, cracks of less than 1mm have appeared vertically from coving to skirting where the solid walls join the alcove plasterboard. Hope this makes sense.

I think this has happened because we have put the heating on a fair bit to warm the house up as it hasn't been occupied for over a year. I don't want to replaster or lining paper anything preferably... Is it possible to fill these cracks or will they simply return? Thanks in advance for the advice. Emmy

I wouldn't worry about hairline cracks, you get them all the time.

You could use pollyfilla to fill in the cracks, though it won't go in hairline cracks. You'd actually have to get a knife/edge of scraper to make the cracks big enough to get the polyfilla in.

We did it when we moved in to our house. The hairline cracks reappeared after a few months.
  • Yes I suppose. Just a bit of a perfectionist I think and seeing the crack in the corner of the room is driving me a bit nuts. I'll have to have a think about what to do...

You can get a polyfilla spray that's meant for hairline cracks just google it, available in most diy stores. Decorators caulk can also be uses as its flexible but I don't think it gives as nice a finish. I'm a bit of a perfectionist the same and they will reappear most of the time but usually not for months and I don't mind spending an hour every other month filling cracks for it to look nice .

I live in an a house of indeterminate age, probably getting on for 400 years.

I laugh at your hairline cracks.
