Bank Lost my application and personal details - what to do?

Hi all,
I went to open up a RBS Graduate royalties account 4 weeks ago. Gave the assistant all of my details as required, filled in the application form as required.
I was told that the account will be open and active in 5-7 working days, and off i went with a smile on my face.
Since then, after 3 calls from me to the bank chasing up the status of my account, i am finally told that my details cannot be located within the bank.
They have my current account details, credit card details, employer, name, address, DOB, mother maiden name, photocopies of my bank statements and drivers licence. Enough for anyone to open up a mortgate, loan, bank accounts, credit cards.
I am highly irrate as is this not a breach of the data propection act? I can accept that details can be misplaced anywhere, no ones perfect...but to know that its such sensitive information about you and knowing what the details can be used to do in the wrong hands has really cheesed me off.
I have written a feedback complaint to RBS.com and am hoping to speak to the supervisor of the bank this afternoon - 'if they have time', says the member of staff when i called this morning. But i called to make an appointment - so much for customer service.
Anyone else had their details lost in the bank? Anything be done about it? Any kind of compensation or request you can ask from them for this serious negligence?
I wouldv lost out on interest for a month from the £2k interest free overdraft, but thats not going to be a big amount.
Any idea's?
Thanks in advance, If anyone can reply asap, that would br great. visiting manager at 1 this afternoon!
Cheers,

Have you never mislaid anything?
Mistakes happen we are all human.
The documents will be somewhere in the branch or department of the bank.
You cannot use photocopies to open anything.
Don't be such a drama queen!
As for the Data protection act - how have they broken it - have you lost out as a result - I don't think so.
If you are civil I'm sure you will get an apology and even a small gift to recompense you for your wasted time.0 -

No - it doesn't cover data on loose bits of paper :-Only information about individuals which is held on computer or is on paper and sorted by reference to individuals is subject to the Act.
Irritating, careless - and you expect organisations such as this to have relatively foolproof systems. But hopefully you can replace it - and if they still can't find it - probably no one else can!If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0
