Stocks and Shares Finding Services - Opinions

Options
Hi there, just looking for people's opinions on the companies that you contact to get a list of stocks and shares that my MIL had prior to her death. We appointed a solicitor to do this and the company they used have come back with a very different list to what we thought she had. There are lots of missing companies where she said she had shares for a long time. do we take this as gospel even is she reinvested her dividends in her shares? There is definitely one that's not on the list we've been provided with that a dividend cheque arrived a couple of weeks after she passed away.

Thanks in advance.

Yes I am go I g to do that but it's a bit annoying when you pay for something that was meant to provide information and you can't trust the data tbh. Also it took 6 weeks to come back, could have saved that time writing to those myself. Lesson learned I suppose.
  • Who did she use to buy her shares? That organisation should have an extensive record of her transactions.

If she had an accountant who sorted her annual tax return you may get some information there.

Do you have any share certificates? I am having a nightmare going through the process of notifying Equiniti and friends of the death of my father and our inability to find the certificates for just 3 shareholdings. We found everything else of his without much trouble, but have no idea what happened to the share certificates. The only evidence of them still being held is the annual dividend statement and cheques. We suspect they were lodged with a bank or solicitor and have tried all the accounts and contacts we can without success.
  • Hi,

maybe they are in a nominee account.
  • They may well be, but we could find no correspondence from any stockbroker or financial advisor and although he had several bank accounts they were all at the same branches for over 50 years. He was a pretty independent type who liked to run his own affairs and it is difficult to see him pass on responsibility to anyone else, especially if there was a fee involved.
