Solar Panel Safety Check
Hi there,
I have just had a phone call from a company called Ecoames regarding our solar panels which were fitted in 2014. They said that a new law is coming in on 28th April to say that all owners of solar panels on semi detached or terrace properties will have to have an automatic shutdown device fitted in case they cause a fire which could damage neighbouring properties. Their surveyor was in the area and could give us a fire safety certificate!! The company which fitted our panels(Smartsave Solutions) has gone out of business so they were calling all their customers.
This was an unsolicited call, they only gave their name when I asked, and am naturally wary so wonder if anyone else has heard of this requirement? I know there are lots of people out there trying to sell batteries and all sorts of stuff around solar panels, we have had quite a few of these sort of calls.
But I have no idea who to go to if anything did go wrong with our panels, or whether they need any sort of regular servicing or even cleaning to keep them working properly.
This company seem to be using scare tactics, saying that several of Smartsave customers have had faulty installations and someone had a serious fire - I take this with a pinch of salt, but more vulnerable people could be really worried!
Has anyone had experiences like this, and do the panels need any attention if they seem to be working OK?

Sounds like a scam to me, but if you are concerned then it may be worth checking with the local council building inspector or try the thread recommended by Merlin.
I'm always very wary of unsolicited calls especially from someone who wants to sell me or do something that I haven't requested. I'd be most concerned as to how they got hold of your phone number as it sounds a bit more targeted than just a random call.Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0 -
Thanks for your replies, I've reposted on the Green & Ethical Board as suggested.0
