Copy songs, playlists & ratings from iPod to Mac

Hi there,
My Mac crashed recently and in restoring (OS 10.2.2) I have lost all the data, luckily for iTunes I have my old (classic) iPod which isn't too out of date, 16,000 songs.
I'd like to copy these back to iTunes. I have checked the box to prevent auto-syncing (i.e. deletion from iPod!).
Can anyone suggest some software that can copy the songs, playlists and ratings back into iTunes? I can see various options around, the ones I've tried seem to be about $40 to copy more than a handful of songs, which I'd prefer to void paying if necessary, hoping for something cheaper, or genuine freeware.
Thanks ... Simon.

i have used Sharepod in the past with success.
it is free but i have not used it for a number of years as i'm now firmly on the android side of things (purely for these type of apple issues).
try this link:

This won't help the OP, but after my second instance of exactly the problem described, I stopped loading music directly into iTunes.
I rip CDs to mp3 files with EAC, dBPoweramp or similar, tag them with mp3tag, then import them to iTunes with the "Add folder to library" dialogue.
If iTunes goes West, I still have the mp3 folder untouched, and backed up separately, so restoring the iTunes library is a single click away.0
