Hi i am having my 2nd lot of tests for cochlear.implant on 4/42018 and wondering if you can tell me how many times did you need to see the hospital from starting tests to getting your cochlear implant done.
Also once you have been given op do you hear a lot better than you did before your op?? Reason for asking is because when i had first lot of tests for cochlear.implant it was discovered i had lost all my hearing in my right ear and i am worried about how much i will hear after implant can anyone help me as just worried about how much i will hear xxx

Which ear are you having the implant in, the one with no hearing or the other?
Mine took about 6 mths from referral to the CI clinic to implant date.
I can hear a lot lot better than with hearing aids but they are not the same as normal hearing.
Speech is an incredible complex sound to hear.
I am fine speaking one to one but noisy pubs and groups of people are still very difficult.
I have since met a large number of people with a CI and the benefit they get does vary from person to person.
You can also get a vast array of add on equipment to help you, my favourite is the radio microphone. So say you are at a meeting or conference you can ask the speaker to wear your microphone which you pick up on your receiver as if you were right next to them.
Not sure about Scotland but there are usually local CI groups who meet up and also the national CI Association you can join.0 -
This is the national group, they used to have some very interesting meetings, not sure if they still do:

There are lots of Facebook groups where people talk about their experiences. I'm not considering a CI but a bunch of my friends have had them recently so I'm in a couple just for curiosity's sake.0

Your implant centre should also be able to put you in touch with user groups, they may even have arrangements for you to meet someone who already has an implant. I have been invited back to speak to a group of potential implantees about my experience.
Some of the manufactures also used to have user groups but I don't know if they still do.
Most people with an implant are happy to tell people like you about their experience but remember they will only have had experience of one manufacturer so don't be swayed by just one opinion when the time if your centre gives you a choice.
Its a very difficult choice to make, because you can't just test drive them all and your decision will last a lifetime.0 -
I am just starting the cochlear implant journey. I got much help and advice from https://www.facebook.com/groups/C.I.UKonly/
Good luck'
