Ask your local charity shop if they have any-they often keep things like evening dresses in the back.

I was faced with this problem when I was married to my first husband and we had several formal dinners to attend, I also belonged to a choir who wore formal black and white for performances. I made myself a long black straight lined skirt with a slit at the back, I then wore it with different tops, at one stage I sewed sequins on it in a feather design......you can wear tunic tops, silky tops, the choice is yours, buy a jewelled belt, or a gold string belt, gold sandals and away you go........one of the catalogues had a really nice sequined top which would look great over a black skirt, sorry cannot rememebr which one.

I go to a few of these each year with my OH the last one 2 weeks ago.
I would say that these days anything goes.
There was no one in anything flouncy or OTT. Mostly fitted single colour mid calf length dress with some sort of shoulder cover.

  • I would second the advice to try TK Maxx. I need to have some more glamorous things for work sometimes (usually smart long black) but sometimes more is called for!
Anyway, got a great dress for £17.99 - full length black with a swishy skirt and halterneck style top.
I would second also the size thing (try different ones) and don't be put off by the jumble-sale atmosphere! (I find it hard to see what I want as everything is so mixed up!)
  • I would say TK Maxx too. The idea of the black skirt is a good one though - might be worth having a look on ebay for something like this?

BTW the last time I did this I got a lovely black dress in John Lewis for £99 which I have been able to wear in a few different ways. As high street stores go, I thought there and House of Fraser were good for evening wear and not as expensive as I would have expected. Though probably a bit much if you need to buy a few.

Also it's worth keeping an eye out for nice scarves, bags shrugs etc in 2nd hand shops or asking around friends and family. There are a lot of us who have bought stuff for one occasion and would be only too happy to lend on to a careful friend :)
  • Have you thought of asking on Freecycle - there may be a freecycler who has something lurking in their wardrobe that it may prompt them to give away.
