evening dress - help!

Good morning all!!!

I hope someone can help me! I have received an invitation for a christmas party but its a formal party and so need to get an evening dress.

I was thinking of making one but dont have a pattern - are they fairly simple (and cheap) to make?
If they are quite expensive to make, can anyone recommend a shop that has quite reasonable prices?!?!

another alternative I was thinking about was asking hire shops how much they sell ex-hire dresses for - has anyone done this before? what sort of price was it?

Many thanks!

  • Depends where you live. Go to your nearest posh area and find a good charity shop, I am sure you will find a bargain.

hiring could be an option but from what OH has said (its his works do) there are going to be a few formal occassions next year with different companies so it could work out expensive to hire a dress for each occassion

a girl at work is bringing in a couple of dresses tomorrow for me to have a look at so fingers crossed one of them will fit (she is very petite)!

    Get yourself down to TK-Maxx.
I just bought 5 evening dresses for a cruise.
3 of then were £40 and the other 2 were £35 which I think is a real bargain.

Ignore the sizes though and don't be afraid to try on different sizes.
    I got 2 size 6's, 2 8's and one 12, so that goes across 4 sizes.

I've bought a couple of evening dresses on ebay one for £25 and one for£50ish. I know it's a bit risky as you haven't tried them on but mine were monsoon and I know what styles from there generally suit me and these two are gorgeous.

You could try buying one on cybergown.com, they have dresses from $49 (about £25 I think) plus P&P, I actually got my wedding dress on here. They have some lovely dresses but also some crazy ones so you may need to look through a few :D

If you may be going to a few do's, then you would probably not want to keep wearing the same dress...have a look in TKMaxx, they do have some great bargains.

  • One of the charity shops round here has a special section for wedding and evening dresses - I think you have to make an appointment - it's upstairs from the main shop - might be worth phoning around.

Otherwise I would also recommend TKMakx
