I can echo the comments about Lloyds/Bank of Scotland/Halifax/TSB having almost identical online banking systems - you only need security codes when setting up new payees or standing orders, and once these are set you can transfer money without further verification. You can get codes sent to a landline or mobile number. Tesco Bank is also similar in that you only need a SMS security code when logging in from a new PC, so if you only use a single trusted PC that might be ideal - I can't recall being asked for security verification outside of that.
HSBC/M&S Bank use the secure key dongle, although I think you can set up a digital one on your mobile if you prefer. Nationwide/NatWest uses a card reader only for setting up new payees or changing some personal details as far as I'm aware as well.0 -
While you may be right in both scenarios I have never had to do either in my many years of using Nationwide as my main bank.
The authorisation for card transactions is a relatively recent change and is a consequence of VerifiedByVISA. I do have recent experience of this. Presumably VISA cards from all banks will need to be verified in the same way.

I always login to my Nationwide account using my card reader so I have never been asked to use it again to make payments - I do still need to use it to set up new payees and make amendments to some of my personal details.

Do you know when that page dates from? I haven't had a text from Nationwide for any of my online transactions (although I have from other banks) and in every case the VbV process is either completely bypassed or requires no user input.

Absolutely it's required for those functions, but as someone who almost always uses personal details to log in I've never needed to card reader for any payment after the first one to a new payee.0 -

"Online shoppers purchasing goods via credit or debit card will soon have to enter a one-time passcode sent directly to their mobile phone via text message to complete certain transactions, This is Money can reveal." July 2018.
My recent transaction was for c £200.
Note also "the change will roll out across the industry by the time PSD2 (Revised Payment Service Directive) lands in September 2019, regardless of your card scheme."

Nationwide amended its Ts&Cs on 11 October 2018.

Nationwide does not (generally) require use of a card reader to make transfers only to set up new payees. There is however a risk that one may be required if a transaction is unusual. If making online purchases by card you may need to be able to receive authorisation codes by SMS to type into your laptop.
Not sure how it defines "unusual", but in the last couple of weeks I've made two transfers from Nationwide to one of my other current accounts, which was already set up as a payee and had been paid to before. The first transfer (£100ish) needed a code from the card reader, the second one (£200ish) didn't.
Not really a problem for me, but I'm not sure how much you'd want to rely on assuming that the transactions you think of as unremarkable, will appear the same way to Nationwide.0 -

Good news, that's an improvement from 3-4 months ago when Nationwide would flat-out reject some transactions at the VBV stage without giving you a chance to authorise them.0 -

Yes, I spotted that, good timing and quite a good explanation of when it might be required and why I haven't seen it until now.0 -
