Oh: I hold the Vinacapital Vietnam IT, and like it. Since it is a single country it is likely to be high risk, but all the fluctuations have been upwards.

Latin America seems to be a good place to lose money. Most index trackers for this part of the world are concentrated in Brazil, so you might just as well focus on this country: I hold the JP Morgan Brazil IT, and while it has not lost money over the last few years it has shown some pretty wild fluctuations.

Look at the Legg Mason Japan Equity fund. High risk/High reward for sure.

There is so much wrong with the OP's question and approach to investing that it's hard to know where to start. If the OP want's lots of risk with high potential reward I suggest "Paddy Power". The results of asking a public forum for high risk investing recommendations will be just an enormous gamble.

Assuming you don't really mean "MAXIMUM" in the literal sense, then an individual share is MAXIMUM risk, and there are plenty of those you can take a recovery gamble on.

I just meant mytolerance for risk and volatility is high!

that's almost right, except that i don't have shares in paddy power :)

i agree that the question is essentially wrong.

there is of course nothing wrong with having a larger portfolio, of which some small slice is invested in very high risk things. but the focus should be on the overall portfolio, and whether it provides a suitable balance of risk vs potential reward. focusing on a (hopefully small) very high risk slice suggests that this is being done for reasons of entertainment, rather than investment.

which is why the idea of a little outright gambling with spare cash - while investing your real portfolio sensibly - has some logic.

though if you really want to gamble, with a very small percentage of your portfolio, i suppose not much harm is done.
  • I had a look at the Russia ITs available but did not like the look of any of them.

On the Neptune: I don't see any sense in mixing Russia with Eastern Europe ("Greater Russia") since understanding the economy of (say) Hungary or Turkey would not help the manager in making decisions about Russia.

is there a Russia one you like?

Thanks for the VinaCapital Vietnam Opportunity Fund Ltd (VOF) recommendation - exactly the type of thing im interested in!

For Latin America I use the managed Aberdeen fund which has performed exceptionally over 2-3 years but yes its focused on Brazil.

I've been dancing around VOF for a number of years but haven't committed myself to date. I believe Vietnam has a lot of potential but has corruption/transparency issues not to mention a communist government. Watch out for the high 4.44% OCF, fine when it's share price is rising but a real millstone in flat or falling years
