30hrs free childcare when self-employed

I'm currently working 16hrs self-employed to be entitled to the 30hrs free childcare. I also have a smaller child at home with me, which is why I'm not working full time.
Does anyone know if the 16hrs (or £120 per week) is taken on average over the year? So if the money I make comes in bits (so loads one month and not much the month after) I will still qualify. Or if I'm ill or go on holiday I can make the hours up?
I've been ill, followed by both children, so I've not done the hours I'm meant to have for March (and I'm not going to have a chance to catch up), if I do the hours in April, will that be OK? Or should I contact them about it? I don't want to lose the nursery place, but also don't want to end up will a massive bill at the end of the tax year.
