Soundproofing

Hiya,
Does anyone have experience of installing soundproofing in a party wall. If so , how did you go about it and how successful was it?
We are planning to build a cavity wall in our bedroom with timber battens and fill it with some kind of soundproofing material. Is that the right idea?
Is this a DIY job or definitely for a trades person?
Thanks!

You also need to consider soundproofing on the section of the wall under the floorboards and above the ceiling. If you soundproof it above the floorboard level sound will travel above and below the soundproofing barrier. The ends result depends on the quality of soundproofing you desire and so will the choice of materials and cost.
You can make soundproofing as much high tech and low tech as you want, either through specialists or a DIY job.0 -
As above, you need to cover all avenues, so it can be difficult .
I'd probably use this sort of product as a filler: http://www.noisestopsystems.co.uk/acoustic-insulation/100mm-dfm-acoustic-insulation0 -
We looked in to it & found that you pretty much have to soundproof anything that connects to the party wall, not just the wall itself. The floor, the wall, between the ceiling & the upper floor, the wall up there, the loft.
Whether their tales are true or not i don't know. I'd assume so - i've read of people tackling this job, not just the immediate wall but tops & bottoms too and ending up disappointed with the outcome - they could still hear next door & they now had less room space as they'd built it out.
Having living rooms & bedrooms meet is a terrible design. We have it & we hate it. IF we were to do it all over again we'd avoid this kind of design in a house.0 -
Bumperoo. I!!!8217;m also interested in soundproofing a party wall. I can!!!8217;t hear low level conversations through my party wall. I don!!!8217;t mind a bit of noise but hearing day-to-day conversations seems wrong.
Has anyone had any success with Acousiticel rubber tiles or mass loaded vinyl combined with acousitic plasterboard?
I!!!8217;ve read a bit about soundproofing too and agree - i think anyone looking for complete sound isolation will be disappointed with any aftermarket soundproofing solution... but I!!!8217;d be interested to know too though how much any party wall sound insulation reduces noise by? 10%? 50%? 75%?0
