HELP needed!!!

I am buying a house with a friend and we have our mortgage approved in principal.

We found a house and put in the offer which has been accepted (YEY) however the mortgage company are now refusing to let us have the mortgage as the previous owner converted the house into 2 flats. A 3rd upstairs bedroom was split into a ensuite bathroom and kitchen...

We wanted to rip out the kitchan and keep the ensuite for now but the mortgage company say that we cannot have the mortgage unless the house was returned to it's original condition.

So we are in jam...has anyone experienced similar and if so how did you solve it or does anyone know of any mortgage companies that wouldn't kick up this stink? (which I don't understand why they are!!)

See a mortgage advisor and go through the whole thing with them. They should be able to find you a lender that will be happy with the arrangement.

Not a bad idea dougk, but it's worth pointing out that the issue could arise again when it comes to re-selling the property, assuming that most mainstream lenders aren't keen on the current layout.
