Caxton Pre Paid Card

Options
Hi,
I have a Caxton pre card mastercard and got it a few years back after recommendations from the MSE site for one of the best ways to get cash abroad with zero ATM fee's, but I can;t see any mention of it on the current MSE site.

Am I out of touch or would this not be the best card to get when travelling to the Carribean?

Any advise would be welcome.

Thnaks

    It's lost its sparkle.

Take a look at Starling Bank.

It used to be one of the best but has been outdone by others in recent years. They used to do separate Sterling, Euro and US Dollar cards but now you can store different currencies on the same card.

I still have one which I got about 5 years ago and keep about £100 on it as a backup but I now use Halifax Clarity as my primary overseas card.
  • The Barclaycard Platinum Travel credit card is now MSE top pick.

The Starling debit card is the best backup IMO.

I still keep one and use it. Really just so I can draw out and carry less currency before travelling, their rates are typically about the same as most pre-ordered currency from in-supermarket bureau or high street places. I like the fact you can top up via the app and then draw it out at an ATM as you need.

Do check your statements carefully, they once took two payments from my account and only credited my card with one! quickly resolved though.

Do find it strange how it was removed without trace on here, poorer deal now or not, I put it down to them upsetting MSE in some way we don't know.

Absolutely there are better cards and rates now.

But as a convenient alternative to ordering and carry a fair bit of cash, especially for going to countries that prefer cash or only take it, like in smaller establishments such as on Greek islands its useful.

It's been removed because simply put it's silly to use one when there are far far better alternatives.

If you get the Barclaycard Travel Platinum Credit Card you don't even need to think about topping it up or buying a certain amount of currency. You simply go abroad use it to buy things and withdraw cash for an almost perfect exchange rate then pay it off in full when you get back with no interest at all.

Why would you want to use a Caxton card where you get a poorer exchange rate and have to top it up with certain amounts of currency.

If you didn't want a credit card then you can get a Starling account which offers the same features of spending abroad and withdrawing cash for an almost perfect exchange rate. It's a bank account so you can put as much as you want on there but it stays in pounds until spent abroad so you don't have to worry about having unused foreign currency on it.

So considering all that it would be irresponsible for MSE to recommend a card as poor as the Caxton one when there are so many alternatives that are cheaper and better to use.

    Absolutely correct.
