Hey guys,
the situation... in a student house with 4 others...the other day i tried to download and install zonealarm..computer frooze so had to restart...and when it loaded up again I was unable to log onto the internet!
Everyone else has good signal and are accessing the internet (hence how I am able to write on MSE now..) but for some reason I cannot connect to the internet! I have Very Good signal, however sometimes it states i have limited or no connectivity...but the end of the day I cannot access any websites which is very annoying!! Have spent 6 hours solid today searching forums and trying little tricks but nope...nothing!!
If any body has been through a similar situation please let me know as I am actually losing my mind and seriously need the internet for my course!!
I really don't want to have to call anybody out as they would no doubt cost the rest of my student loan!!
cheers

start, run, cmd
ipconfig
what does it say?
is za installed currently, if so, does it work when you close it?
does it worked wired?
is the router encryptedEver get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
I had the exact same problem, so I turned off Zone Alarm, because the router will/should act as a firewall. Once ZA was turned off, I connected without any problem.
HTH.

ok typed ipconfig and got this...
Windows IP configuration
Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:
Media state...................: Media disconnected
Ethernet adapter Wireless Network Connection:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix......:
Autoconfiguration IP Address.........: 169.254.211.49
Subnet Mask..............................: 255.255.255.0
Default gateway..........................:
Thanks a lot for looking guys!
in regards to zonealarm...i was downloading it when my computer frooze so had to remove battery in order to restart it...and removed any zone alarm software i could find!0 -
This has happened to mine a few times, I do the obvious (ie troubleshoot the connection thru vista and try and repair), then restart which usually fixes it, if it doesn't I turn the router off then on after a minute and this always fixes it.Fr. Stack: While you were out, I got the keys to your car. And drove it into a big wall. And if you don't like it, tough. I've had my fun, and that's all that matters.0

You aren't picking up an ip from the router, which usually means the encryption key or type is wrong, or mac address filtering is wrong (if you have enabled it), or it could be wireless interference.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0

the encryption key is ok (thats the password yeah?) but maybe the MAC address could be dodgey...how do i fix this? I can access the network page through someone elses computer but am not sure what to do then!!??
im with virgin media using a Belkin router...
thanks again for looking!!0 -
I'm with virgin and belkin and it often tells me thru the diagnostics that an address is wrong/can't be picked up but switching the router off then on always solves it. If you go into the network page you could check to see if it is set to 'hide' the wireless but other than that i don't know. Did you try rebooting the router? Sometimes i have to mess about with it for half an hour until it picks up the signal again but this only happens max once every 2 months, the other comp downstairs periodically fails too but seems to come on of its own accord after a reboot or router rebootFr. not much help i know, but i had no end of problems with a belkin router and so did my sister and neice, as soon as we all switched to different routers the problems went away,
as someone mentioned, try power of the router and disconnect the router from the phone socket, allow 5/10 mins before reconnecting and powering the router back up, this will allow it to reset and be granted a new ip addresssmile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to....

^i seem to hear nothing but bad news on belkin routers: to be fair, they do have a lifetime warranty which they DO uphold but what's the point? I have an Ozenda adsl modem/router which has been fairly reliable.BLOODBATH IN THE EVENING THEN? OR PERHAPS THE AFTERNOON? OR THE MORNING? OH, FORGET THIS MALARKEY!

ok well i have tried playing about with the router but it doesnt go down too well with my housemates as they are all connected and happily surfing....
as they are connected successfully i don't imagine the router is to blame....
i have called up Belkin 3 times in the last 2 days but they have been useless! said i should disable my firewall...have done... said i should reset internet explorer settings....have done...
but nothing!
now when i connect it spends ages on 'acquring network status' and then connects but then goes to 'limited or no connectivity'.........
any suggestions guys??
again thank you very much for helping! should i try and have a go on my friends computer as they have access to the belkin network page.?0
