    Good Afternoon,
Recd my final Redundancy and 12 weeks notice, I finish actual employment 12th June.
When can i then start taking Job Seekers Allowance?
Or does the monies you receive from your last employment and redundancy package have to spent?
    So only claim when skint!?
    thank you
    Keithtoon.
You can claim contribution based from Day 1, but I believe unless it's changed you get nothing for first 7 days.

    Hi all,
Well been out of work for a month and thought i would update you all.
good news is i have just received my JSA £73 a week.
but been kicked back on Council Tax Reduction.
there excuse states i have too much savings?
But they included my redundancy monies!
Job Seekers do not include it in their calculations but Council Tax do!!!!!
All i did with Redundancy monies was to buy Premium Bonds i have copies of everything but they class the Premium Bonds as savings!
I showed them where the monies come from ie bank statements and the transfer to paying for the Bonds but nope..they say it savings!
So how can one department ignore it but another dismiss it?
    Confused......
    All the best..
    Keith.

Basically because legislation is written differently for different applications.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

JSA is not means tested for the first six months if you qualify for contributions based. It will be means tested in six months of you are still claiming.

You may be advised to look up "deprivation of capital" too, because whilst you are claiming benefits, your money is not entirely your own to spend as you like. I'm not an expert on this subject, but I know enough - basically, if you run through your savings or capital in order to reduce it below the means tested threshold, they can ask to see what you have spent it on. And they can decide that you have deliberately spent money in order to claim benefits. If they decide that they treat you as still having that money, even though you've spent it.

Given the smaller amounts, it may not affect you. But do be careful. I've seen people end up in a right pickle because they didn't know about it.
  • You won't get help with mortgage interest for 39 weeks after you qualify for it which is yet, and now it will be in the form of a loan not benefit.
You need some specific benefits help which you can get here on mse:

    Missed this first time round.

I would have just brought forward the move to Spain and got on with that process along side looking for work.

Depending on the numbers and how much cash I had I think I would have pre-empted the redundancy payment coming in by reducing the mortgage.

The problem with benefits is that middle ground where you don't really have enough to not need them and having nothing you just eat your cash pot.
