New meter before switching suppliers?
I'm planning to switch from Eon to a smaller energy supplier - the MSE switching tool tells me the cheapest is Breeze, so it'll probably be them, though I haven't 100% decided yet.
However, I've just received a letter from Eon saying my electricity and gas meters are old models that they're phasing out, and they'd like to replace them with a "new self-reading smart meter" - presumably for free, though the letter doesn't explicitly say so. I'm supposed to call them to arrange an appointment.
So my question is, should I get this done before I switch? It'll delay the switch by a few weeks, but I'm concerned that the new supplier would want the same thing doing but would charge for it - is that actually a concern, or are Eon's new meters strictly an optional thing as far as other companies like Breeze are concerned?

No, do not waste time getting them changed.
That letter is E.ON's way to pretend that you must have a smart meter. It would say something totally different if the meters were past their use by date and would quote the relevant law in the letter. There is a thread below about E.ON's scare tactics on smart meter installs.
Also it may take months to install and you are losing money waiting.
And when you do swap supplier, the smart meter will become dumb and you will have to take you own readings from it anyway.0 -
Eon are now using Secure Liberty smart meters. They are a pain to use. the IHD only displays the gas reading in kwhs.
Meter readers may well get the electric meter reading wrong because for some unearthly reason the meter shows Kvarh readings as well as kwh .Useful in their homeland of India where they are made but no good here at all
I m with Eon and will refuse them when they get in contact to fit them
.Eon reps on here have said they will fit standard dumb meters when my old analogue meters need changing so that will be OK by me.0 -
