    I do sneaky bread too - usually white warburtons danish as hot buttered toast on a Sunday morning. I limit my dairy/legumes rather than cut them out because i like cheese, and peas/lentils are cheap.

    Muscle foods, I used them when they were Westin Gourmet and thought they were ok - not great, not terrible. We used to struggle to find a value box that wasn't padded with processed stuff. Mixed reviews on the chicken fillets, think I read they are now imported in which case you might as well buy 5kg/£20 in Makro and actually see what you are getting. They were huge, but rather tasteless but as a base protein for curry they were ok.

    Heartier get some good reviews but again the offers usually involve processed stuff so I haven't tried them.

    Best online butchers i have tried: https://www.neilpowell.co.uk/product-category/beef/

    Expensive but excellent

    wonder if they will deliver to Scotland will have a wee look and see thanks, just had a quick look ... they look good very nice website and the meat looks lovely

    I have not used Musclefoods, but have had 2 packs from Heartier. The first was via an offer on Martin's newsletter, once you have signed up to their own e-mail newsletter they notify you of offer codes.

    All the things we have had have been absolutely delicious

    This is the last order, cost after code £39.95
    Package 1 arriving on 28/02/2018 (1 x Topside / Silverside(Weight: 1kg) 1 x Pork loin joint(Weight: 1kg) 1 x 2 Flatiron steaks 1 x 2 Picanha steaks 1 x 2 Gammon steaks(Weight: 8oz per steak) 1 x Featherblade braising steak 1 x Lamb mince 1 x Sausagemeat 225g 1 x Streaky bacon(Weight: 210g))

    Outdoor reared, free range, native breeds as indicated.

    I read some of those names and thought eh I have never heard of that cut, thank goodness its native breeds lol ... that is probably a good point as well ... native breeds locally sourced grass fed organic and the highest animal welfare standards must be the gold standard of meat ... obviously comes at a premium

    I love Heartier meats especially their wonderful pork chops!:D
    £7 per person is a lot for many of us but you could easily spend that daily (and more) on ready meals and takeaways. I reckon with a bit of tweaking you will be able to eat decent quality meat if you eat less of it overall and supplement with cheaper vegetarian options. If your diet is good and balanced you should be able to cut back on the supplements. Re waste/using up, meal planning and making good use of your freezer (coconut milk freezes just fine) should reduce/eliminate that. I'm sure our ancestors would have wasted very little;):)

    I didnt know I could freeze coo!!!! milk thanks will keep that in mind as we dont need alot at a time, I agree I think if I can cut down the portion sizes then the money I am saving from eating more should be able to buy a better quality, not that my quality is bad just now btw, I use the local butchers and not a supermarket, I just think I want to get it better, and honestly where possible help out local producers, I am a kinda pain in the backside that way, maybe I need to work on the portion size first ? then the meat quality then the vegetable quality ?

    does that sound like a plan ?

    Ok today I have been cooking again, I am working a 12.5 hour day tomorrow and 10 hours the rest of the week so cooking wont be on my high priority list of things to do.

    Things made today

    1kg mince =£10
    400g carrots =24p
    3 onions=50p
    Oxo cubes=40p
    bisto=11p

    total=£11.25
    80p per portion

    ...

    That is a lot of money for mince! I pay £8.99 for 5lbs / 2.25kg at the butcher. Do you have a butcher or are you stuck with supermarkets?

    (I take the 2.25kg slab and cook it up with a kilo of onions and carrots (60p ish each) and a celery head (90p?) and portion it into 8-10 bags, each of which will do the two of us for a generous meal.)

    I pay £9.99 a kg of steak mince in the local butchers, that is an average for here, I have paid more, I havnt paid less, I havnt thought of using celery with the cooking though, I did use carrots and onions, not sure how the celery would work with bisto and oxo cubes tbh ... but might be worth a try,

    where do you get 2.5kg of mince for £8.99 is that a local butcher? that is a very very different price compared to what we pay

    Apart from saying their meat is "responsibly sourced", I can't find anything on the site that gives any information about where the meat comes from or how the animals are managed.

    Mojisola thanks also responsibly sourced is important to me

    I wouldn't trust a company that doesn't give a definition of "responsibly sourced" nor any indication of where they buy their meat from.

    It does indeed, if in doubt freeze it is my motto :rotfl::rotfl:Many things (though not salad:eek:) freeze really well especially if you are going to use them in cooking where any slight texture change gets absorbed.

    Same here for steak mince in decent butchers:). You can get cheaper online I find but 1kg of mince can go along way if you reduce portions and/or stretch the mince with veg or lentils etc.

    The celery addition was just because the three veg together make sofrito, the basis for loads of Italian mince dishes, and I figured it was worth a try. :D You can't really taste it but it pads it all out a little more.

    We are in an affluent area of the South West. It's a local butcher who sells meat from lots of local farmers but the beef is Scottish. I don't think it's steak mince somehow but it's good enough for us. The large slabs are sold at cost. (And if you've come out without any money they let you pop back the next day :rotfl::o)
