Hi
We have just bought a modern build property and the lounge that is 5.2 X 4.1 metres (17’0” x 13’5”) with no fireplace/feature. we're looking to add either a corner tv or a corner fireplace with a stacked stone veneer effect.
what are your thoughts? will it make the room look smaller to have a corner fire feature?

I moved into my flat last year. There is no fireplace in my home either.
I made that area the place for my tv wall mounted , with a cabinet holding all of my audio equipment etc . Having central heating made it a no brainier ..0 -
Personally, I think a lot of "fires" that are added to flat square living rooms can look a bit naff. So, if you do add a fire, I'd recommend getting lots of opinions from people you trust about whether they think the one you are thinking of installing looks good.
In terms of making any corner feature, it depends a lot on where people will sit. Especially for any fixed TV, you don't want either (a) chair placement to look odd/unnatural, or (b) chair placement looks normal, but people have to crane their necks upwards/sideways to see the TV.
Why do you want to put it in the corner? Any online images that show the kind of effect you are hoping for?(Nearly) dunroving0 -
So I take it you didn’t add a fire? We really want to have a cosy feel to the house0

I can’t add links or pictures on here for some reason :-( so I can’t show what I mean
We’ve been advised against placing a tv above the fire. So that through our plan out of the window. So we’re just looking at other suggestions really. If you have any please feel free0 -
You can't add links/pics as you are new. If you space the link out like "money saving expert dot com" for instance, someone will link or post the full link for you.0

Maybe use the quote bubble to make it clearer who you are responding to ... presume this is anothercasualty's post?I can’t add links or pictures on here for some reason :-( so I can’t show what I mean

For me, I think unless you are sitting 10 feet away from the fireplace, you end up getting a crick in the neck because the TV is too high if it is above a fire. Can't imagine the rising heat does the TV any favours, either. I think the whole "TV above the fireplace" thing was a fad and now looks a bit naff to a lot of people.
Where are the doors into the living room? Which corner are you planning to put the feature? Can't you have a fire on middle of the wall and TV in the corner?(Nearly) dunroving0 -
Build the TV into a corner housing and use a flame screensaver?
The TV can be at a better height then, but would you want the TV on with a screensaver?Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
We don't need to put TV in corners now they are flat.
We don't need fires if the heating system has been designed properly
chances are you are not going to be putting in a proper fire but sort of fake chimney and flu won't come cheap.
You can get low level fake fire which still mean a TV at a sensible height.
You will lose a big corner if you want decent size TV.
Think about your TV use cases, sources and sound system.
as others have said doors windows and radiators often dictate where stuff goes.
if a modern build, there will be a plan on-line somewhere to help people visualize0 -
we're looking to add either a corner tv or a corner fireplace with a stacked stone veneer effect.
Would this be a fake & non-functioning fireplace or a live fire ?
If the latter, you'd need a flue which will add considerably to the cost. If it is just an electric fire effect, make sure it can be removed with the minimum of damage when you tire of it.Her courage will change the world.
Treasure the moments that you have. Savour them for as long as you can for they will never come back again.0 -
People have used fires as centrepieces of their homes since pre-history.
Now, there is no need for a fire, but people still hanker for the focal point they've lost, hence perhaps the ridiculous popularity of installing log burners and multi-fuel stoves in modern urban properties.
I don't know what the answer is, but house builders clearly haven't found it.
I don't know either what a a 'stacked stone veneer effect' fireplace is, but I'll just observe that most houses weren't built with corner fireplaces, so there's a chance that putting one there will make it even more awful than it sounds!0
