We have no idea how it happened.. her date of birth is 04/07/98 And the date of birth they have is 04/07/72!! So it is not a mis-click and completely baffled as to how it happened

I'd just pay the £300 and let your daughter do her own insurance in the future.

You have misrepresented the risk - not the insurer so, yes, they can back date it.

If she was in an accident they would have put her own claim on hold until she paid up the additional premiums.

That's much better than them thinking she's done it deliberately, and getting a fraud marker against her name (which would not just impact future insurance quotes but ANY type of financial product , ie phone contact, mortgage, even getting a bank account).

Maybe worth a complaint to insurer still though to avoid getting policy cancelled.

As it's 26 years before the real one, let's say you were 10 then for sake of argument, clearly you wouldn't have given birth at that time or say your daughter obviously isn't 46 this year because you're only 45 or whatever.

Don't bury your head in the sand, keep at them, ring, record name, time and details, explain mistake, cover the reasoning etc. Write to them, confirming the above, again demanding they do not cancel the policy due to it being such a massive mistake

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.
