No heating or hot water - of all the times!

Options
Probably a coincidence but, yesterday evening we had a new thermostatic valve fixed onto a radiator. The boiler is in the garage so we didnt notice last night but today the boiler was making quite a noise, rather like a boiling kettle but we still had heating and hot water. Now we have neither!

The boiler is Worcester 240 RSF. The pilot light is out. I have the user manual and it says that an overheat thermostat interrupts the supply in the event of overheating and to press the reset button. I've located the button but it doesn't press in. It looks more like a screw with a cross on the top.

I've tried phoning the plumber but his phone is turned off. Its getting cold in the house and I'm concerned about pipes freezing. Please is anyone able to advise on this?

Is that a cap over the reset button? I got confused by this, but worked out there is a cap over the button that you have to unscrew.

Thank you aliby21. It did look like a cover but I've tried to unscrew it and it wont move! I think I'll have to admit defeat on this one :(

What!!!8217;s the pressure like on the gauge. Could of lost a bit of pressure which made the boiler noisy and then overheated.

Whereabouts do you live? I dont think any part of the UK will get down to temperatures where pipes will freeze tonight.

If you are worried, leave your loft hatch open to allow some residual house heat to permeate the loft. Do you have some electric heaters you can use in the house until the boiler is fixed?

Replacing a trv could involve loosing some water. Does the boiler need topping up?

  • Thanks all.
Yes we have a fan heater on now. The boiler pressure is OK. Thankfully the plumber is on his way so we should be sorted soon. Fingers crossed we don't need a new boiler.
