Roof Valley Replacement

Options
Roof is leaking and multiple roofers have suggested a valley replacement as the original builders nailed the lead on. We had it sealed 2 years ago but the recent snow seems to have brought the problem back and the buckets get full quicker this year!

Been quoted £1400 and £1550 verbally but still waiting on written quotes - however time is of the essence with a leaking roof!

It is a detached house in Black Country so scaffolding is required and the quotes were both for Lead (not GRP) with the valley length about 8-9ft total around a gable. They seem a little high to me but I am not a roofer!

One roofer has offered to replace both valleys of the gable for £2500 (price cheaper due to using the scaffolding at the same time) which seems a little unnecessary to me (but the other valley is also nailed through apparently so may leak eventually!)

Can anyone advise?

A nailed lead valley might sound like a crazy concept, but if everything is overlapped with adequate dimensions then it should work. So my immediate reaction is a careful look, and analysis is needed here, so over to you. Is this really the problem?

If it is the problem then it is likely the upstands, the lapping, the valley boards and everything else will also be at fault. It could even be the capping or ridge detail is wrong - again only you know this.

Does the other valley need replacing? The obvious answer is to determine exactly what the problem is with the leaking valley and then see if this is present on the other one. In addition this other valley should be thoroughly inspected.

Only you know precisely where any, or all, the leaks are coming from. Hence I assume you have carefully studied this and traced back all the wet to the source(s).

The simple, lower cost, and de-skilled route is to have grp valley.

You say multiple roofers have taken a look but you have to establish the problem and specify a solution. If you fail on this you stand a chance of being taken for a ride. At present your post comes across as one that has not been carefully analysed and established. So be careful before proceeding with work.
