I threw out all of my old HiFi just before Christmas - including a Dual CS505 turntable and a NAD 3020 Amp - It was just gathering dust and hadn't been used for 10 years + - took it to the tip !!

:doh:A classic set up from back in the day and still good to use today, mine is very similar with a pair of Wharfedale Diamonds....In daily use. The tip monkeys got lucky that day!

Maybe swing for this Audio Technica AT-LP3 from Amazon ...

Seems to get good reviews ... What Hi-Fi for example!

I have bookmarked this one, it does look good. From what I can make out on amazon, it needs powered speakers, which would of course up the price, but may be worth saving up for. I suppose I could always get a cheap record player in the meantime (but not expect great sound quality).

As for vinyl versus CD or digital, there is a sciencey reason why the sound of records is 'warmer' than CDs, something to do with the increments of the sound waves if I remember correctly. That's not the reason I want to go back to records, though, - I just prefer them!

Just to add, we do have a branch of Richer Sounds nearby so I may well pop in there. Thanks everybody.

Thankyou, yes I was thinking more of a record player that doesn't need an extra amplifier but which has speakers and/or a socket for headphones. Perhaps the quality of these isn't too good, I'd be interested to know, if anybody has one.

At the moment I just have a little Sony hi-fi which has an input socket round the back so I suppose I could plug a lead into it and play through those speakers.

So the TT shown should just plug in as it has a buildin phono preamp, no need for extras.
  • Perfect, thankyou.

I have my eye on an audio technica at the moment. It's a cheaper one than the one linked to earlier in the thread but reviews on RicherSounds suggest it's a good enough starter record player. Much as I'd love to go for the more expensive ones I have to cut my coat according to my cloth at the moment.

Thanks for talking me out of buying the retro all-in-ones, anyway. That was what I was originally going to go for.
