Fined - No Car Tax Oversight

Hi, I have just received a fine for £330 for driving with no car tax. Unbelievably its had no tax since June 17. A total mistake on my part but I have not received any reminder/correspondence from DVLA.
Although I now know from internet research the DVLA are not obliged to send reminders I've had one every year so assumed this was something they always do and I guess I never thought about my tax until the letter arrived. Having checked they say they sent a reminder and a final reminder. I can't believe that 2 lots of post sent on separate occasions would go amiss and I find it odd that given I neither taxed nor SORN'd the vehicle they haven't been in touch.
My car has had valid MOT & insurance, is it worth appealing do you think? Thanks
