Mystery light

We've recently moved into a house that is full of electrical randomness! Lots of light switches that possibly operate mystery lights we can't locate, and various outside lights that we can't find out how to switch on. In the porch there is this wallplate with a big orange light in the middle. It is always 'on' and glowing unless we have a power cut. When the power comes back on, the orange light is off but a security light on the outside of the house comes on. It stays like this for several hours, then the security light goes off and the orange light on the wallplate comes back on. Does anybody know what that's all about?! My friend calls it 'the Eye of Sauron'! :rotfl: Thanks in advance folks.
