I think we are going to leave it. I've spoken to a builder, and he said it could most likely be the perlings (don't know how to spell) which have moved, resulting in pushing the top of the gable end out. It would be a very costly job to fix as you'd have to likely rebuild the whole gable end, andthen possible re- render it.

Also, the inside of the gable end, has been studded. They've said they could be hiding damp possibly.

Sounds as if both your surveyor and your builder know their stuff and have your best interests at heart. Ignore their advice at your peril and best of luck with your search. I would keep their numbers to hand and use them again when the time comes.

I would walk away, sounds like it's going to cost a fortune.

I walked away from an old house once, the owners had put plaster board up inside on the outside wall (I thought they were hiding damp), also the ceiling was hanging down a lot and they tried to tell me the kids had splashed too much in the bath. My kids used to splash when they were little, we didn't have any problems with it damaging the ceiling! I think the people selling just couldn't afford to do the repairs and so wanted to sell up and pass it on to someone else.
