Paying Double

I switched energy suppliers for the first time ever recently from EDF to Lumo and should be saving £60 a month which is great. However I appear to be have billed by both companies in March in the space of just a couple of days. Is this normal practice at switch over? Thanks

  • Normally the new provider will tie all the ends up with the old provider. Might be worth giving them a call to check they've done that. There could just be a slow reaction and the old provider will refund the payment

Normally the smaller companies ask for the first DD in advance - see T's & C's
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

And they will need to pay their final bill once the readings have been provided. I would also talk to EDF to see how much this will be.
  • im having the same problem. i moved from scottish power to tonik and im getting payments taken from both for last 2 months. Rang up tonik and they said they cant do anything do to data protection? so rang scottish power they say still with them made them check and got an apology and told will put my money back into my account. The 'problem' is that people think that switching suppliers is nothing more than an administrative change between two suppliers forgetting that there are a myriad of processes/partners underpinning the supply and transportation of gas and electricity. It is by no means unusual to pay 2 suppliers for up to 6 weeks after a transfer goes through - particularly, if the date of transfer is close to a normal DD payment date. That said, there is no question of paying for the same energy twice. All overpayments will be returned once the Final Bill is raised.
