"Pet Friendly" Carpetright carpet, not so...

... "Pet Friendly".

Hi all,

My folks moved into a new pad before Christmas and after the whole family chipping in to gut it and redecorate they invested in a new "pet friendly" carpet from Carpetright to go in the lounge, hall and bedroom (so quite pricey).

Mum had told sales guy they had 2 cats, and their site lists it as "pet friendly" but as you can see, with even stopping the cat from scratching the carpet when possible, the carpet doesn't look much like "pet friendly" to us now.

Mum rang them and told them but they pretty much said "tough" so I'm just wondering if they have any consumer rights that may apply?. I've got a cat who scratches my carpets but you sure can't see her efforts like you can here.

Or by "Pet Friendly" do they mean something different, like "applies to snakes only"?

By pet friendly they mean that they're made of polypropelene. It means that you can take detergent to the carpets and they clean up quite well after your cat or dog has peed on it. There's a clue in the word 'friendly' that it isn't pet proof.

Wool wouldn't behave in the same way, it would stain or shrink etc. Definitely not pet friendly.

I think you have unrealistic expectations if you think a carpet is going to stop a cat from shredding a carpet. The carpet isn't made of Teflon and no one on the planet is going to sell you a carpet saying that it can't be shredded. It's made of fabric!

Edit: Having looked at the Carpetright website, every single Pet Friendly carpet is polypropylene. That's the selling point. It doesn't enable your cats to shred and your dog to eat carpet with impunity. We have two dogs and we have LVT hard flooring in our house simply because that is the only type of floor that will withstand the battering the floors get. We have polypropylene carpet up the stairs and I did have carpet on the very large bottom step but our big dog only likes to wee on soft things so the bottom set was his favourite place in an emergency. And then just became his favourite place. :mad: Needless to say, pet friendly may withstand the odd accident but does not withstand a constant jetting from a labradoodle and that bottom step is now LVT. He doesn't wee there at all anymore. It's the dog's fault, not the carpet. No carpet is going to fair the lifetime of a domestic pet particularly well.

If they!!!8217;re indoor pets, look into soft paws (get cheap Chinese versions on amazon) to stop this happening again.

I presume you have scratching posts? Some people think they don't work, but kittens can be trained to use them.

There again, we're like Doozer and have LVT in the cat-allowed parts of our home (there's a clue), so they only have the curtains and soft furnishings as alternatives....and they know what'll happen if they try those! :rotfl:

As for soft paws, I'd never use anything that prevented cats from following their normal behaviour patterns when outdoors, which is where they are much of the time. If I wanted a quiet, totally well-behaved, predictable pet, I'd get a lizard.

Yer they have a scratchpole, it's just one of their 2 cats doing the carpet too. I assumed pet friendly meant it's tougher than that when it comes to cats having a scratch, like I said, my mog does it and you can't see any marks and my carpet is older than my folks. There's has gone that bad since about September.

Lesson learnt, they'll have to keep wielding the water spray bottle to stop him.

You could try one or a couple of those card scratch pads (like this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Catit-Jungle-Stripes-Patterned-Scratching/dp/B0032G6VVQ/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1521122335&sr=8-5&keywords=cat+scratch+pad) and put them where the cat scratches. Once the cat is used to scratching the pad instead of the carpet, gradually move them to wherever you want. They're much cheaper than a new carpet!

I think you’ve hit on the problem in your post. What does ‘pet friendly’ mean? I’m pet friendly but I’d look a real mess after a good cat scratching!

Bought a Carpetright carpet for the stairs & landing six-months before getting a cat. Apart from getting screwed by Carpetright over the wastage of the left over carpet, we did get one with wool content.

It doesn't make much difference as far as scratching is concerned, but her fur does adhere to the wool fibres, so, all too often vacuuming!
With the scratching - over time it should get less, but to reduce it - use an indoor plant sprayer (adjusted to jet), best if it arrives without warning when they are doing it, and they don't know where its coming from.
Mine doesn't meow much - instead would get my attention by scratching!!
