Hi
Posting here because the giffgaff forums are full of spammers who copy paste stuff. Literally 10 replies all saying the same thing.
I have 2x ipads that I am trying to set up on a gigabag plan (3GB), just using the mobile data on iPad air 1.
For the life of me I cannot work out why it is that this stupid device or network fails to register when using the giffgaff APN. I've done it all, put the sim in while powered off, booted the device, enter the APN in EXACTLY as the guides and forumites say but to no avail.
But oddly enough the default o2 settings that the iPad lauches works fine.
I know I probably shouldn't use these sims for business use. But I have no choice, the main networks want you to be on a contract for any decent amount of data. On pay as you go you pay through your nose for the data.
3GB on pay as you go will cost £20+. On giffgaff at least you can get it for a tenner.
The iPads are being sent to clients to use, last thing I want to hear from them is the data aren't working. Is it safe to use the o2 APN in the long term.
I can't believe it. I have the o2 apn and the sim cards work perfectly. I go into setting and change it to the supplied giffgaff APN and it immediately stops working and gives the "could not activate the data network" error message.
Anyone know why this is?

I don't know the answer to your question, but clearly you do have a choice, you have simply decided not to take it and to use the SIMs in a way that may be contrary to the T&Cs.0 -
Not sure if the details are different for a Gigabag (I use a Goodybag), but the APN settings I use on my Android phone are:
Name = giffgaff.com
APN = giffgaff.com
Proxy = Not set
Port = Not set
Username = giffgaff
Password = Not set
Server = Not set
MMSC = http://mmsc.mediamessaging.co.uk:8002
MMS Proxy = 82.132.254.1
MMS Port = 8080
MCC = 234
MNC = 10
Authentication type = PAP
APN type = Not set
APN protocol = IPv4
APN roaming protocol = IPv4
Bearer = Unspecified
MVNO type = None
MVNO value = Not set0 -
Have you checked you have the correct carier profile installed so that it chooses GG and not O2?0

Installed where and how?
My phone is not locked to any network. With a GG SIM installed it connects (voice) by default to GG but shows by default the O2 APN ... the GG APN needs to be added.0 -
GG have issued different sim cards. I use a batch of 12 GG sim cards for data on iPads.
I can tell you with absolutely certainty that the newer sim cards issued since mid 2017 do not seem to work correctly on iPads with gigabag plans. the GG APN do not work - you need to use o2 APN.
I have done everything - download the GG profile. erased all network settings and re-installed. With these newer sim cards issued mid 2017 there seems to be an issue.0 -

why do you bother to post some pointless drivel? Some people just have too much time on their hands and can read the t&c of a service but can't offer a grain of practical advice to a thread they're posting on.
Yes GG say their sims are not for business use, but people on their forums openly discuss using it for business and GG do not mind. They are also the only network to provide VAT RECEIPTS by default on their 30 day plans, why would they issue VAT receipts if they are strictly against it.
They probably just state not for business use simply to absolve themselves from any "loss of business" lawsuits due to service disconnections from business customers. Maybe it's because o2 have required giffgaff to only supply consumers and not businesses as part of the contract to level the playing field with all other virtual networks that use o2 who also have the same limitation. But giffgaff are not doing anything to enforce this.
As for having other "choices". You try getting sim cards (up to 12 at a time on occasions) for 3-4 day use with the main providers. They'll give you a paltry 1GB for £12, wont get receipts at all so you can't claim VAT0
