I recieved a letter from dwp regarding my late mothers estate. I am executor if the estate and they have qritten asking for my bank details to transfer funds owed. Im not clear on this. Mum was 70 and worked all her life. How does this work? Is it a case of looking at what pension youve drawn and how much you have paid in?
I recieved this letter a few weeks ago so im guessing i will hear something soon. It certainly looked genuine so I hope it wasnt a scam.
Thanks for any advise:)

State pension if taken 4-weekly is paid in arrears. So it could be a small amount covering the period between her last payment and her date of death.
I assume that she had claimed State Pension.0 -

It is also possible that your mum had deferred taking her State Pension (see gov.uk). DWP are automatically notified of deaths, so they calculate money owed and contact the executor.
You can lookup their contact details on gov.uk and ring or email them by that route so you are sure you are speaking to them.0 -
Give them a ring to clarify what it actually is.
Have your own NI number to hand so they can verify your identity.
All they will ask is for you to nominate a bank account for payment. They will close the file once payment has been made. Note though, this can work both ways if there is an overpayment from another DWP account held by the deceased.0 -
Margot123 is right. So is Linton. The form is probably a BR330. It requires you to complete various sections about you (as you're dealing with her estate), your mum and where she passed away... as well as bank details of an account you want the money (arrears) paying in to.. The DWP don't send cheques so only a bank a/c will do to transfer the money. Make sure you sign it as well. After you've sent it in follow up with a call about a week later to check it has arrived and then ask nicely if they can get on with it and pay it asap. It will then take another week to arrive in the bank.
If she was married at the time of death then her spouse is also due for a "re-calculation" of their State Pension as well - presuming they were getting a pension. If the spouse was under State Pension age then there is a Bereavement Support Payment to be completed for them. See the Government web site for further info. Hope that helps you.0 -
It could be that the estate is also due a winter fuel payment even though she has died, as well as some pension.0
