Advice on shower waste/trap needed

Hi there.
Just refitting our ensuite and at the moment replacing shower tray and waste.
The shower we had before had both a shower waste and a P trap on the pipework.
The P trap was knackered (and very smelly). So this was chucked away along with the original shower waste. I have a new one that comes with the shower tray (usual ones with a chrome top and a little basket inside to collect hair, etc).
When i went to fit a new trap (shallow bath trap from Wickes) annoyingly it is too long and while i can put the tray down, it's sitting on top of the compression joint which is then pressed against the floorboard - which to me is just asking for trouble later on.
I could cut a bit more floorboard up to dig it lower but then I seem to read that shower wastes with the little basket are in fact traps and a separate trap is therefore not needed?
Is this true? What's the best approach?
Thanks for any help.
Ben

A separate trap is not needed. Just ensure the little hair catching basket is pushed right down.Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.0

Thanks - wouldn't let me post a link as i'm a newbie!
Thanks also for the reply. I had a feeling it may just need the shower waste but wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything (unless anyone says otherwise!)0
