Outside Patio floor same level as kitchen floor

Hi guys,

I have just bought a house and I have an outside patio around the back.
We have noticed that the outside patio level is at the same height as the back door (double door).
We have been told that the outside floor level should be at least 6 inches to reduce the risk of damp or flooding.

Could anyone instruct us into what we should do? I.e, types of drains we could maybe install, lowering the outside patio level or any other / better suggestions.

Thank you

I would look to lower the patio. Has it been built right up to the house wall?

Now it!!!8217;s there I would be reluctant to change it unless you have actual issues. Does water drain away from the doors I.e the patio slope away.

It is supposed to be 6" down from the damp proof course so that water that splashes up from the surface doesn't soak the brickwork. At the door it doesn't matter, elsewhere I'd tend to agree with above, if it doesn't cause damp don't worry about it.

    At least it's not inside.
  • I am unsure as to whether it brings in damp yet as we are due to move in within the next two weeks. My father pointed it out to me. I don't recall there been a slight gradient or anything like that.
The patio comes right up to the door yes, inline with the kitchen floor.

I would wait and see if it causes a problem as the fix may differ depending on the extent of the problem.

It sounds like it's supposed to be flush?

The patio should tilt slightly away from the house, a discreet Aco type drain could be installed in front of the threshold. Some manufacturers of level threshold doors have their own systems.
