Equiniti and ' lost' shares

My husband and I own a few shares, owing to the fact that we have moved several times , dividends which have been paid have never reached us. We had a letter reach us from a company called Equniti issuing a final letter saying if we did not respond by May 2018 the shares and payouts would be forfeit. These shares wont be worth a lot and any payments would not have been big but go back to 1995 Equiniti are charging an admin fee for us to be able to get the adress changed on our shares and for them to pay the uncashed dividends , they say they will give me a list of these. Because I do not know how all this works I wanted to find out before I become a scam victim. Can I change the registered address myself without going through Equiniti ? I dont understand how they become involved , perhaps some kind soul can educate me ? Thanks

They are the registrars for the company or companies in question?
You might be best advised to get future dividends paid direct to your bank accounts?0 -
forgive my ignorance xylophone but is it to Equiniti I ask to pay straight to our account ? Also , it is normal then for them to charge admin fees ? thanks0

See https://www.shareview.co.uk/4/Info/Portfolio/default/en/Home/Shareholders/Pages/DivReissues.aspx
There is an easier way to receive dividends and prevent the need for future reissues. In the UK, with most bank or building society accounts, it is possible to have dividends paid direct to your account. This will give you immediate cleared funds on the dividend payment date and remove the risk of your dividend cheques being lost or mislaid.
An administration charge is quite normal.
Have you contacted Equiniti by phone?0
